The following is an interview with Ed Ahern, author of the short story “Cave Canem,” which appears in Neon Druid: An Anthology of Urban Celtic Fantasy (available now on Amazon in digital and paperback).

1) What inspired you to write your Neon Druid story, “Cave Canem”?

I wanted a supernatural figure with provenance who wasn’t already a beaten-to-death trope.

2) What’s something that always seems to pop up in the stories you write?

I have a snarky sense of humor and if I’m not careful I’ll stick in a zinger that spoils the mood I’m trying for.

3) Which book/story has had the biggest influence on your writing?

Several books by Ray Bradbury. He’s a little out of vogue now, but he’s able to generate a delicious sense of wonder in even scifi settings.

4) Excluding your Neon Druid story, what piece of writing are you most proud of, and why?

At the risk of being kicked out of the club, have to admit that I also write a lot of poetry, most of it published. There are maybe a half dozen that I think I can brag about.

5) What’s a “universally loved” book/story/movie/TV show that readers would be surprised to learn you are NOT a big fan of?

Never was a big Star Wars fan. The movies are okay, but not as noble as the Lord of the Rings trilogy nor as campy as Guardians of the Galaxy.

6) What writing project(s) are you currently working on?

A thriller novel tentatively titled The Will of the Wisp.

My horror thriller “The Witches’ Bane” just won the annual Mariner’s Award at Bewildering Stories and is available as a free read here.

Thanks, Ed!

Ed Ahern resumed writing after forty odd years in foreign intelligence and international sales. He’s had two over hundred stories and poems published so far, and three books. Ed works the other side of writing at Bewildering Stories, where he sits on the review board and manages a posse of five review editors.
